The High Altitude Robotics Extravaganza (HARE) is an event which combines the Northern Arizona FLL Regional Tournament and the Arizona FTC Championship into a single action-packed day of FIRST at Coconino High School in Flagstaff, Arizona. It provides a one-of-a-kind venue, unique to FIRST, in which younger FLL teams are inspired through witnessing what they can achieve in high school, and in which FTC teams are encouraged to join in with the innocent enthusiasm and energy of their younger peers.
HARE has its roots in 2008, when the growth of the FIRST Lego League (FLL) in Northern Arizona necessitated a new regional FLL competition for Northern Arizona. The CocoNuts FIRST Robotics Team, as the initiator of that growth, graciously decided to coordinate and host the 1st Annual Northern Arizona FLL Regional Tournament. This tournament was a huge success, with countless participants complimenting the CocoNuts on the organization and timeliness of the tournament, and the supportive, enthusiastic atmosphere created by the CocoNuts team members.
In 2009, because of the success of the 1st Annual Northern Arizona FLL Regional Tournament and the fact that the CocoNuts proved their maturity as a second year team via winning the Arizona FIRST Robotics Competition Regional Chairman's Award, the CocoNuts were offered the position of Arizona FIRST Tech Challenge Affiliate Partner by the previous affiliate partner, the Carl Hayden "Falcons" Robotics Team. This responsibility not only included coordinating the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) program throughout the state of Arizona, but it also included hosting the Arizona FTC Championship. The CocoNuts accepted the offer, but now had an additional competition to coordinate on their hands.
The CocoNuts decided that by holding these two competitions on the same day, that it would not only improve the experience of all the participants involved, but that it would be the most efficient usage of the CocoNuts' resources. So the Northern Arizona FLL Regional Tournament and the Arizona FTC Championship were combined into a single one-day event at Coconino High School.
This event was named the High Altitude Robotics Extravaganza, symbolizing not only the uniqueness of Flagstaff, Arizona as its location (at an elevation of 7,000 ft), but also signifying the enthusiastic craziness of such a large scale event in the world of FIRST.
To this day, HARE brings together hundreds of participants, volunteers and spectators from across the state of Arizona so they can each celebrate the achievements of every participant, and so they themselves can become inspired by the true power of FIRST. |
