2010-2011 FLL History
Due to severe budget cuts and school closures within the Flagstaff Unified School District, the number of FLL teams took a hit as coaches were moved to different schools and FLL kits were misplaced, but because of the CocoNuts focus on expansion throughout Northern Arizona, there was only one less team attending our FLL Regional Tournament than the previous year, for a total of 25 teams attending the event. The CocoNuts started new teams in Leupp and Prescott.
2010-2011 FTC History
FTC had an incredible jump in 2011, with the number of attending FTC teams at the AZ FTC State Tournament moving from 8 to 16. This growth made it almost impossible to host the FLL Regional and the FTC State competitions on the same day, thus splitting the High Altitude Robotics Extravaganza into two separate events.
The CocoNuts had their own FTC team this year, "The Mini Nuts". The Mini Nuts were 2nd seeded and won the Think Award, which they received for having an exemplary Engineering Notebook. The Mini Nuts were also runner-up for the Inspire Award.
2010-2011 Outreach History
During the school year, the CocoNuts presented to a plethora of events, including the Festival of Science, Marshall Elementary Exploration Stations, Knoles Elementary Science Night, and the Coconino Coalition for Youth: Voices in Action, and Coconino County Fair, and Facts "Lights On!" events to spread the word of science and technology throughout Flagstaff and the surrounding area. In November 2010, the CocoNuts were invited to present at the Presentation for Excellence in After School Programs at Arizona State University, along with team 842, the Falcons. In addition to the above, the CocoNuts also presented to the local Lion's Club, the Flagstaff Unified School District, twice each.
The CocoNuts were also judges for both the Mount Elden Middle School and the PEAKS Elementry School Science Fairs, participated in Coconino Institute of Technology recruiting at local middle schools, and had floats in both the Coconino High School Homecoming and 4th of July parades, and countless presentations.
The CocoNuts successfully applied to the Adopt-an-Avenue and Adopt-A-Trail program to help clean up local streets and trails around Flagstaff, Arizona. They currently clean up the section of Beaver Street between Phoenix and Dale as well as a portion of the Urban Trail near Coconino High School. The CocoNuts also volunteer at various clean-up events around town.
The CocoNuts once again taught the NAU Summer Enrichment Program. One team member, through her experience teaching the program in the summer of 2009, was actually offered a job by NAU to be a paid teacher for the duration of the program.
This summer the CocoNuts plan to teach another week long summer camp called "C.O.C.ON.U.T.S.", located at Coconino High School. They will be teaching children ages 9-13 about robotics using an FLL curriculum.
2010-2011 Competition History
After a crazy and amazing FLL and FTC season the CocoNuts entered into the six week FRC build season that January. Then, in March, the CocoNuts participated in the Arizona Regional at its new location in Chandler, Arizona. They were seeded fourteenth and competed in quarter-finals. The CocoNuts were awarded the Chairman's Award for the second time, therefore qualifing for World Championships.
Having qualified for World Championships again with the the CocoNuts headed to the new Championship location, St. Louis, Missouri. The CocoNuts had a blast, met lots of amazing people, and even went to a Black Eyed Peas concert!
In the past four years, the CocoNuts have devoted over 5,700 hours of community service and outreach within their local community.
