One may wonder what the team name, the CocoNuts, has to do with the mascot "Rocky The Squirrel". Well.... they were not meant to have any correlation, as they each arose separately.

Name Origin

The team name is derived from the CocoNuts' home school's name, 'Co-co'-ni-no, combined with what the enthusiasm of the CocoNuts led them to be labeled-'Nuts', which resulted in an entirely symbolic name for the team that just happened to mimic the name of a tropical fruit.

Mascot Origin

As for the CocoNuts' mascot, around the time the team was founded, an archaic treasure was discovered after years of slumber in the CHS Science Department. Needless to say, it was a "cool" squirrel that has grown wiser with its "long time of contemplation". Considering the popularity of the Cold War cartoon "Rocky and Bullwinkle" during the squirrel's golden years, the CocoNuts named him "Rocky the Squirrel" after the famous flying cartoon squirrel.

Specifically, "Rocky" is an Abert's Squirrel (Sciurus aberti). Abert's squirrels are native to the Ponderosa pine forests of Northern Arizona, and have distinctive tufted ears, as seen in the squirrel graphic used by the CocoNuts.
